As an emerging leader, you are transitioning from an individual contributor to a managerial role with more responsibility. This is a challenging career step. New managers are eager to face these challenges and this six-day program, offered in Fall 2016, will help you reflect on the leadership style that works best for you and your employees. As you develop a better understanding of yourself, you will also learn how others perceive you.

In these challenging economic times, it is important for you to gain an understanding of financial statements and analysis, which will be a key focus of one of the emerging leaders sessions. The second part of the program focuses on learning how to build a team, valuing others and leading change. The program concludes with organizational development and integrating elements to help you achieve your career and organizational goals.

Raj Basu, Ph.D.DR. RAJ BASU helps managers become leaders and achieve optimal performance from employees. Dr. Basu is an associate professor of management and vice president for Academic Affairs at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the Southern Management Association, and is also a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma, Class XVIII. His research has been published in multiple academic journals. Dr. Basu researches and teaches in the areas of leadership, employee performance, team building and change management. He is a three-time recipient of the Chandler-Frates & Reitz Award for Outstanding Teaching in the MBA program, the Greiner Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching and the Richard Poole Award for Excellence in Outreach. Dr. Basu received his MBA from Duke University and a Ph.D. from Purdue University.s in the aerospace, energy, financial services, technology, manufacturing, government, and non-profit sectors.

Matt Bowler, Ph.D.DR. MATT BOWLER teaches seminars that draw upon his research and experience to provide participants with first-hand knowledge. Dr. Bowler is an associate professor of management at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Bowler teaches management topics, including leading change, building social capital, leadership, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations and management skills. Dr. Bowler has received multiple teaching awards from the OSU MBA Student Association. Before entering the academia world, Dr. Bowler spent time in Guatemala managing a relief organization that provides surgical and construction services to rural Mayan villages. He attended Missouri State University, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in management and an MBA. Dr. Bowler earned a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Kentucky.

Ken Eastman, Ph.D.DR. KEN EASTMAN is the Dean of the Spears School of Business. He has conducted many noncredit seminars in national and regional organizations such as BlueCross BlueShield, Chesapeake Energy, ConocoPhillips, Ditch Witch, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Lopez Foods, OG&E, Samson Resources and Sonic Corp. Industries. In recognition of his outstanding performance in the classroom and in public, he has received numerous teaching awards. He also received the OSU University Outreach Faculty Excellence Award twice, the Richard W. Poole Faculty Outreach Excellence Award, and Dr. Eastman has a long-standing commitment to lifelong learning and education. His research interests are mainly in the areas of leadership and organizational politics. He has published articles in such journals as the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, and the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.

Lee Manzer, Ph.D.DR. LEE MANZER is a professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University. He has several years of practical experience as a chemist, sales representative, and marketing research assistant for Dow Chemical Company. Dr. Manzer is a nationally-recognized expert on service implementation. In addition, he has presented hundreds of seminars on topics such as attitude change, accountability, and creating a service culture for a variety of national organizations and associations, including energy and petrochemical companies, manufacturing firms, financial institutions, and public service agencies. Dr. Manzer is a multiple winner of the University Teacher of the Year Award and was selected into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame in 2010. In total, he is the beneficiary of 14 undergraduate teaching awards.

Betty Simkins, Ph.D.DR. BETTY SIMKINS is the Williams Companies Professor of Business and professor of finance in the Department of Finance at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business. She is co-editor of the Journal of Applied Finance and a member of the Natural Gas and Energy Association of Oklahoma. She loves teaching as evidenced by the six teaching awards received at OSU including the 2001 Regents Distinguished Teaching Award,the 2001-2002 Outstanding MBA Faculty Award, and the 2013 Richard W. Poole Faculty Excellence Outreach Award. Prior to entering academia, she worked in the energy industry for Conoco (now ConocoPhillips) and Williams Companies. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arkansas, her M.B.A. from OSU, and her Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University.

Alexis Smith, Ph.D.DR. ALEXIS SMITH is an assistant professor of management in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University.She has over five years of experience conducting applied research in organizational behavior which spans workplace issues such as gender, diversity and status, politics and influence, as well as the design and utility of health and safety training interventions. Her projects including the effectiveness of political skill, impression management, mentoring and emotional expression. She has published in The Academy of Management Perspectives and the Journal of Applied Psychology among other research publications. Dr. Smith received her doctorate in Organizational Behavior from the A.B. Freeman School of Business of Tulane University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rice University.

Andrew Urich, J.D.DR. ANDREW URICH is an associate professor of management, Eastin Center Chair and Director of Student Development within the Eastin Center for Talent Development at The Spears School of Business, Oklahoma State University. In addition, he served as a member of the Executive MBA faculty of Zayed University in Abu Dhabi and Dubai (United Arab Emirates) from 2004 until 2012. Dr. Urich received a law degree from Case Western Reserve University. He taught at OSU-Kyoto, Japan during the 1992-1993 school year and has led more than 23 travel and study abroad classes focusing on the topics of creativity and innovation in business. Dr. Urich is a lecturer, researcher, and consultant in the areas of influence, negotiation, and ethics and is a recipient of the Greiner Outstanding Teacher Award, the University Outreach Faculty Excellence Award and many other teaching awards.

Cynthia Wang, Ph.D.DR. CYNTHIA WANG is an associate professor in the Department of Management at the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University. Cynthia’s research interests are in the area of negotiations & bargaining, culture and diversity, ethical decision-making, and creating effective groups and teams in organizations. Prior to her academic career, Cynthia worked with Imagitas Corporation (a subsidiary of Pitney-Bowes) in a role managing and consulting for public and private sector organizations. Her clients have included several Fortune 500 clients, along with major U.S. government entities (e.g., United States Postal Service). She received her Masters and Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and also has a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University.

  • Certificate – Participants will earn an Emerging Energy Leader Certificate after completion of the 11 sessions (over a six-day timeframe) as well as the three additional webinars. This certificate is worth up to 3.9 CEU’s (39 hours) or 46 CPE credits.
